Salvage Operation Underway for Fire-Ravaged Car Carrier Fremantle

Next Phase of Salvage Operation Begins

After nearly a week of intense firefighting efforts, the fire aboard the 200m-long Panamanian-registered car carrier Fremantle has been extinguished. The next phase of the salvage operation is now underway, with the ship being towed to a new location for further inspection and repairs.

Fire on the Fremantle Highway

The fire broke out on the Fremantle Highway on May 5th, while the ship was en route to Fremantle, Australia, from Bremerhaven, Germany. The ship was carrying approximately 3000 new cars, including luxury models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Salvage Operation

The initial firefighting efforts were hampered by the intense heat and toxic fumes from the burning cars. However, the crew of the Fremantle Highway and salvage teams were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the ship.

Once the fire was extinguished, the ship was towed to a nearby anchorage for inspection. The preliminary assessment revealed significant damage to the cargo decks and the engine room. The ship is now being towed to a repair facility for further repairs.

Impact of the Fire

The fire on the Fremantle Highway has had a significant impact on the global car market. The loss of 3000 new cars, including high-end models, has created a shortage of supply and is expected to drive up prices. The insurance costs for car carriers are also expected to increase as a result of the fire.

The salvage operation for the Fremantle Highway is expected to take several months to complete. The ship's owner, Grieg Maritime Group, has stated that the company is committed to recovering as many of the damaged cars as possible.
