Biography
Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei (born 19 June 1939) is an Iranian cleric, philosopher, and politician who has served as the second and current Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989. He was previously the president of Iran from 1981 to 1989. Khamenei is the second-longest serving head of state in the Middle East, after King Salman of Saudi Arabia.
Khamenei was born in Mashhad, Iran, into a religious family. He began his religious studies at a young age and studied under some of the most prominent scholars in Iran. He became a close follower of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
